    Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of President Ryden, Assistant Executive Director Suiter, and myself, we would like to inform you of an unfortunate decision the Board of Trustees of the DAANJ. Unanimously, the board moved to cancel the 2021 Annual DAANJ Workshop scheduled for May 2-6, 2021. With great regret, this is the second consecutive year the Covid-19 virus has forced the cancelation of our educational conference.

The DAANJ's priority will always be the health, safety, and welfare of our Athletic Administrators, their schools, and the communities they serve. The Executive Board has been monitoring the data provided by the CDC, NJ DOH, and the Governor's office concerning the spread of the virus and the unknown variants. The members have also responded to a survey sent to the entire membership requesting their intentions to attend the workshop. Over 300 schools were surveyed to determine who would be willing to attend the May Workshop; however, many expressed they would not attend or stated they were undecided. The survey results indicated approximately 141 Athletic Directors would attend, over 100 were undecided and many others either would not attend or their BOE would not approve. With these results along with recent announcements, several other associations have canceled their workshops (ie., the Superintendent's Association) and we determined that in the best interest of our members to cancel as well.

The Executive Board did not make this decision without careful consideration of the entire Board of Trustees. Positivity rates continue to rise daily in New Jersey as of this week and our contiguous states present a problem regarding the infections, especially in New York.

While it is disappointing that we will not be meeting in person to reconnect with colleagues and exhibitors, we will make every effort to recognize the many leaders in New Jersey Athletics during the 2022 conference. In the meantime, we will continue to work diligently to offer leadership opportunities using social media to assist you to improve your ability to grow professionally.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for your understanding and support of this very disappointing decision. These two years have taught us to be very compassionate and cooperative as well as being prepared when adversity strikes. Be well, stay safe, and do not hesitate to reach out to any Board of Trustee.

    Warm Regards,
    Bob Hopek
    DAANJ Executive Director
